Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) and Fundación Universitaria Seminario Bblico de Colombia (FUSBC) partnered to host “Male and Female in Christ: Toward a Biblical View of Christian Identity and Ministry” in Medellín, Colombia from July 7-9, 2014.
This was CBE's first conference in Spanish, and the three-day event was attended by biblical educators, activists, students, and church leaders from many backgrounds. Topics included women in church leadership, female leaders in the Bible and history, the challenges that face women in South America, and gender-based violence, among many others.
“Speakers and attendees spoke honestly about their disappointment with the church, its failure to address abuse, and its shallow reading on passages related to the shared leadership of men and women,” stated Dr. Mimi Haddad, CBE’s President.
When asked about the conference Florkime Paye, CBE’s events coordinator, said, “The 2014 CBE conference in Colombia served as a great meeting point for like-minded people who came from different perspectives and worldviews, all ready to discuss women in ministry and the challenges they face.”
The conference served as an opportunity for CBE to establish partnerships with leaders in Colombia, discuss some of the key issues that face women in the church, and distribute resources to leaders.
“As with most CBE events, our free resources on abuse flew off our table almost immediately,” noted Dr. Haddad. CBE distributed 300 Spanish translations of 'Still Side by Side,' an important summary resource on egalitarianism, among many other resources.
CBE will make recordings and resources from the conference available on cbebookstore.org, CBE’s bookstore, in the coming weeks.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online book service, and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
