Taking part in Group A at the 2014 Copa Centroamericana are Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. Group B will feature four teams including Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The results of this event have lasting consequences, as the four highest seeds this September will qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The team that wins this tournament will advance to Copa America Centenario, which is a 16-team tournament that will also be played in the United States in 2016.
On paper, the favorite coming into this tournament will be one of the 2014 World Cup darlings, Costa Rica. Costa Rica won Group D with 7 points, earning two wins against Uruguay and England. In the Round of 16, they needed penalty kicks to get passed Greece and in the quarterfinals, advanced to penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes against the Netherlands, but couldn’t get through the talented Dutch squad. Following their performance in the World Cup this year, Costa Rica saw their Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, rankings move up 12 spots to 16th place. That is their best ranking of all time and they will look to continue their success into this tournament.
The 2014 Copa Centroamericana is the 13th time the event has been held. The tournament is organized by Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol, or UNICEF.
