CarePoint Health is First in New Jersey to Receive Newest Surgical Robot Platform
Hudson County, NJ (PRWEB) July 23, 2014 -- CarePoint Health is proud to announce that Christ Hospital is the first hospital in New Jersey to receive the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System, the latest and most advanced robotics platform in the da Vinci series. This 4th generation robotic platform is a technological leap and a profound step forward in innovation. The intuitive da Vinci Xi has broad capabilities and can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive and complex surgical procedures. The acquisition of the da Vinci Xi represents a breakthrough for health care in New Jersey.
Previously, patients had to travel out of state to find the technology and a trained physician to perform robotic surgery at the highest level. Now, for the first time, patients have access to the most advanced robotic surgery program in the state. The da Vinci robot at CarePoint Health - Christ Hospital is part of a larger surgical initiative, led by Dr. Daniel Smith, to respond to the growing health care needs of the region. CarePoint Health has recruited some of the best surgeons in the country, with more than 6,000 successful da Vinci procedures completed among them, to ensure top quality care for its patients. Dr. Smith leads Gynecologic Oncology and General Gynecology at Christ Hospital and is one of the first gynecologists certified to use the da Vinci robotics platform to perform minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Smith is also well recognized for his training of new surgeons on the use of robotics and the innovative role they plan in surgical advancement.
According to Dr. Smith, the da Vinci Xi is a milestone for health care in New Jersey. “This is truly the wave of the future. We have the most sophisticated tool available to provide patients with superior and innovative surgical care. The da Vinci robot enables a surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. We can now seamlessly integrate our surgical skills with the latest technology.”
For more than a decade, the da Vinci surgical systems have provided patients with a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery that reduces many of the costs and complications associated with open procedures. The new da Vinci Xi system was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery for complex diseases and conditions in gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgery. By enabling more efficient access throughout the abdomen and chest, the da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion and an ergonomic design. As with all da Vinci Surgical Systems, the da Vinci Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.
In addition, the da Vinci Xi includes the powerful da Vinci Skills Simulator, a new virtual-reality tool that helps train surgeons to use the robotics platform. Simulation in all forms is becoming an important part of the learning experience for surgical technology. By providing a controlled re-creation of critical steps in instrument control, simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a non-clinical environment that once required expensive models or cadavers for learning. The da Vinci Skills Simulator provides surgeons with objective feedback on their performance when they complete an exercise. Over time, surgeons can track their progress on the device and work to improve their skills before they use it on patients.
