At the close of National Iced Tea Month, China Mist looks back at how it got to today. From 1982 Dan Schweiker and John Martinson have tirelessly made better tea their top priority. Like most success stories, China Mist Tea Company had its humble beginnings but started with a simple idea. Dan and John were passionate about their tea and were simply seeking a better way for people to enjoy tea. The same old restaurant teas just weren’t cutting it and they wanted to do it better.
The Journey of Creating the Perfect Tea
Dan and John embarked on a journey to create iced tea that could become a part of everyday life. They pioneered new brewing technology to help create fresh-brewed iced teas and even experimented with different tea and leaf combinations to create the ideal mixture. Dan and John tried test after test until eventually they stumbled on the combination for a perfect black tea.
Starting China Mist
Once they perfected their formula for black tea, they wanted to share it with as many tea fanatics as they could, so they began packaging and shipping their creation to restaurants in the area. Their shipping and packing operation started in John’s garage until they soon outgrew the space. In a little over a year in business, they found that others enjoyed their formula as much as they did and they began to expand rapidly. It was at this time that future CEO and Board Member, Rommie Flammer, joined the team while she was still in high school. These three pioneers expanded the company and, over the course of 30 years, built a leading tea brand.
What Makes China Mist Great?
Not only does China Mist have an amazing story and staff, but its products are truly unique. There are over 40 flavor blends created right here in Scottsdale, Arizona, and we are incredibly selective about the flavors we use. We work directly with our growers to ensure that the best ingredients go into making the industry’s leading teas. Our leaves are plucked, processed, and flavored in small batches in order to preserve the natural oil and essence of the leaves and to ensure the creation of the best possible teas.
A Family of Firsts
Dan and John don’t take the term “pioneer” lightly. China Mist has been the first company to create a number of unique things that improved the industry and grew the brand. Some of our ‘firsts’ include:
- Creating the first gourmet loose leaf iced tea for restaurants
- Creating the first Passion Fruit Iced Tea for foodservice, bringing this fairly uncommon fruit to America
- Introducing fresh brewed iced green tea to foodservice
- Providing the first organic and fair trade fresh brewed iced tea for foodservice
- Creating the first iced tea Quality Assurance Program to give customers the best tea drinking experience possible
- Becoming the first company to create restaurant quality iced tea for home brewing so that people can enjoy it in the comfort of their own homes
