TrueVision 3D Surgical, a world leader in ophthalmic 3D surgical guidance and visualization, announced today it has been issued a patent by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for fundamental technology underlying computer guided methods for limbal and corneal relaxing (LRI/AK) incisions for astigmatism correcting procedures.
The TrueVision U.S. patent no. is 8,784,443 B2. It broadly discloses and claims real-time multidimensional visualizations of target surgical fields with adjustable, positionally accurate, real-time, virtual surgical reference indicia that are automatically positioned to compensate for motion during the procedure.
“We are gratified to see the USPTO recognize the uniqueness of our invention and its practical realization in TrueVision’s Computer Guided Surgery System (i.e. TrueGuide/TruePlan) for intra-operative incision templates for astigmatic correction,” said Forrest Fleming, TrueVision’s chief executive officer. “We believe computer guided surgery is an emerging standard within ophthalmology; it has been exciting to be at the forefront of its advance. This latest patent is consistent with our belief that our approach is novel and fundamental for both current and future products in the surgical market.”
TrueVision’s Computer Guided Surgery invention uses preoperative data and imaging to calculate optimal incision locations to achieve specific targeted refractive outcomes for individual patients.1-3 In addition, the guidance system has the ability to integrate with surgical microscopes and/or the rapidly growing use of cataract and corneal surgical lasers, as well as display the surgical field of view in 3D and 2D simultaneously4.
“This latest patent is another significant milestone affirming TrueVision’s pioneering position in the new global market for computer guided cataract surgery,” said A. Burton Tripathi, PhD, executive vice president and chief technology officer of TrueVision Systems. “This is truly breakthrough technology and it is very satisfying to see that the USPTO has found our invention patentable.”
This U.S. patent joins a growing portfolio of issued patents and pending patent applications that TrueVision has in association with its pioneering work in the area of surgical visualization and computer guidance.
