'Mobile and SMS are ubiquitous,' explained Baker. 'More than 69,000 texts are sent every minute, with a 90 percent open rate.'

The fifth annual Nonprofit Mobile Day gathered experts in nonprofit fundraising to help charities and fundraising professionals understand the ins and outs of mobile marketing and mobile commerce. Among them, Reed Baker, CEO of Sophist LLC and creator of Text-to-Pledge®, was invited to educate attendees about the power of mobile giving. Other notable organizations represented at the daylong conference included speakers from UNICEF, the Nature Conservancy and Goodwill.
During his lecture, titled “Text-to-Pledge: Unlocking a New Revenue Stream at Events Through Mobile Giving,” Baker cited key industry facts and figures about mobile use and went on to describe best practices for a mobile campaign. Baker closed with a look into the future of mobile giving and asserted that the key to successful technology is clean consumer facing products that are simple and user-friendly.
“Mobile and SMS are ubiquitous,” explained Baker. “More than 69,000 texts are sent every minute, with a 90 percent open rate.” Baker went on to share examples of how Text-to-Pledge has helped nonprofits significantly amplify their live-event giving campaigns, with an average of $700 per pledge that has amounted to $1,500 donation pledges raised per minute.
Text-to-Pledge® is a live mobile fundraising platform, often used to drum up excitement and amplify giving at galas and high-end fundraising events. The technology encourages large-scale pledges by incoming pledges live and on screen, while presenters on stage invite attendees to text in their pledges of support.
The Text-to-Pledge technology has successfully enhanced fundraising efforts at more than 250 events since 2007. “Technology without strategy doesn’t move the needle,” Baker went on to say during his presentation. “We have to pair mobile with best practices and sound execution in order to translate the opportunity it represents into the new revenue and new data.”
Following the seminar, Mobile Commerce Daily published an article summarizing Baker’s presentation, titled “Sophist Exec: More Mobile Opportunities for Fundraising Events.” The article explains how the ask for donations typically works, talks about the future of fundraising, and explains the benefits of Text-to-Pledge®.
