Grand Prix Debut in Modesto Uses Mabey Bridges to Provide Safe Passage for Spectators During Race
Modesto, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2014 -- Mabey Inc. provided two temporary bridges to the City of Modesto for its first-ever Grand Prix race to be held August 1-3. The event is expected to attract 15,000 spectators and, with that kind of volume, the city needed to provide safe passage for pedestrians. Modesto’s event organizers worked with Mabey to provide a walkway over the racecourse to access food, vendors, and other facilities at the event.
"The Mabey bridges are going to be the centerpiece of the entire Modesto Grand Prix. Without the bridges, the Grand Prix would not be the grand event that Modesto deserves," said Modesto event organizer, Scott Humphries.
The two pedestrian bridges were built and installed on July 26th by the City of Modesto. This is the 5th year for the Annual Superkarts! USA Pro Tour with nearly 300 superkart drivers registered to compete. Drivers are expected to hit 100 mph on the straightaways but then have to maneuver the eight 90-degree turns along the course as they race their way through the city streets. Mabey’s 40-foot QuickBridge® was installed using a “crane-assist method” where a crane picks up the entire structure and lays it on top of prepared footings. The 51-foot Mabey Universal Bridge is a panel bridge system — built like an erector set — and also placed with a crane atop Mabey’s MAT 75 Support Towers.
The Pro Tour is divided into four license levels ranging from A through D. The junior level, a D license, starts at 7 years old while the A license is reserved for the most accomplished adult drivers. A ladder of driving tests and accomplishments also contributes to the rise in driver status. The event is estimated to have an economic impact of $5 million for Modesto.
