Two of Brabantia’s new houseware offerings, the 30 and 40 liter Flat Back fingerprint proof matte steel pedal waste bins, have received the prestigious Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certification®, which recognizes Brabantia’s commitment to environmental friendliness and sustainability in the design and manufacture of these products. Brabantia’s new Flat Back fingerprint proof matte steel pedal bins are the very first waste storage solutions to ever receive this distinguished accolade.

Awarded by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), the Cradle to Cradle Certification® process is based upon guidelines set by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. This non-profit has set a standard of rigorous principles and criteria by which they review and ultimately certify products and manufacturers whose innovation and design methodologies effectively and positively affect people and the environment. The Institute was created to bring about a new industrial revolution that turns the making of things into a positive force for society, economy and the planet.

The Institute administers the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard, a systemic approach to product innovation that spurs the creation of truly beautiful, high-quality products, and transforms the production of consumer products into a positive force for society and the environment. The Cradle to Cradle Certified® mark provides consumers, regulators, employees, and industry peers with a clear, visible, and tangible understanding of a manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability.

“Because Brabantia aims to continuously improve its innovation and product quality using Cradle to Cradle as a platform, we create products that not only delight design conscious consumers but also exemplify care and consideration for our planet,” said Tijn Van Elderen, CEO of Brabantia. “We are very honored to have received this noteworthy distinction for our Flat Back bins and that their production and manufacturing have met the five categories for certification according to the Cradle to Cradle principles: Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy Use, Water Stewardship and Social Responsibility. We are extremely proud of this certification and see it as a crucial milestone in our journey to achieve 100% product recyclability in order to leave our world a better place for generations to come.”

“We are incredibly grateful and pleased that two of our newest products have received this highly esteemed certification,” said Nicole Gnudi, Managing Director/General Manager of Brabantia USA. “In Europe, Brabantia has announced the goal of becoming a completely environmentally friendly company and has a strong track record of creating products that are artfully designed, extraordinarily durable and sustainably produced. It is also very exciting for us to have designed and produced the first waste bins to ever be awarded this very meaningful and noteworthy designation.”

Adds Gnudi, “At Brabantia, we are dedicated to the design, manufacture and creation of the most artfully crafted, responsibly manufactured and most durable and longest lasting home steelware products made anywhere. Our houseware products are mainly constructed of high grade, recycled and recyclable materials, many of which, including the Flat Back pedal bins, are manufactured in our own specially built factories that utilize solar energy and recycled water, among many other innovative green technologies. It is so gratifying to receive the C2C Certification® which recognizes Brabantia’s goal of becoming 100% recyclable by creating products that are good for people and good for the planet.”

“We are delighted to have partnered with The Container Store to exclusively offer these bins, both at The Container Store’s retail locations around the U.S. as well as online at http://www.containerstore.com,” Gnudi says.

Brabantia’s new C2C certified Flat Back 30 and 40 liter fingerprint proof matte stainless steel pedal waste bins retail for $129 and $149, respectively. As with all other Brabantia fine home steelware products, the bins carry the company’s unparalleled 10-year warranty which covers the lifetime of the product.

About the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Program
The Cradle to Cradle Certified® program is a third party, multi-attribute eco-label administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute that assesses a product’s safety to humans and the environment and design for future life cycles. The program provides guidelines to help businesses implement the Cradle to Cradle framework, which focuses on using safe materials that can be disassembled and recycled as technical nutrients or composted as biological nutrients. Unlike single-attribute eco-labels, the Cradle to Cradle Certified® program takes a comprehensive approach to evaluating the design of a product and the practices employed in manufacturing the product. The materials and manufacturing practices of each product are assessed in five categories: Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy Use, Water Stewardship and Social Responsibility.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified® program was founded in 2005 by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). In 2010, William McDonough and Dr. Michael Braungart formed the non-profit Institute to manage and administer the certification program as an independent third-party organization.
