ON World: Half of Americans Are Interested in Wireless LED Lighting
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2014 -- Wireless LED light bulbs will be widespread in American homes within the next five years, according to global technology research firm ON World.
“Reliability has become the number one smart home concern for consumers and ZigBee and the upcoming Thread protocol both provide reliable wireless mesh networking solutions,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director.
Wireless LED lighting is one of the fastest smart home and Internet of Things markets with retail sales tripling in 2013. By the end of 2014, most major LED lighting manufacturers will offer wireless LED light bulbs and the majority of these will use ZigBee. ZigBee for residential lighting is supported by the Connected Lighting Alliance that has more than doubled its membership since it was launched in early 2013. Thread is an IP-based low power wireless mesh network protocol for the smart home, promoted by the Thread Group that was just launched in mid-July.
According to ON World’s recently completed survey with over 1,000 U.S. adults, a third of likely smart home purchasers are interested in buying wireless LED light bulbs. Moreover, 48% are willing to pay $10 or more for a smart wireless LED light bulb and 26% will pay $20 or more. As an alternative to paying upfront, 44% of the respondents would spend $5 per month on an LED lighting control system service and 22% are willing to spend $15 or more per month. Reliability is the most important smart home sensing and control system feature selected by over half of the likely adopters.
By 2020, there will be 100 million Internet connected wireless light bulbs and lamps worldwide.
