pMD, the leading innovator in mobile charge capture and physician communication, launched an Observation Result (ORU) interface to streamline cardiology test interpretations performed in the hospital. pMD’s cardiology customers are using the ORU interface to automate charge capture and optimize revenue for their test interpretations for electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, and stress tests.

When a provider interprets tests in the hospital, the cardiology system produces electronic data for each test result and professional billing charges are automatically generated in pMD. This charge automation frees the physicians from the tedious process of having to manually bill for the test interpretations altogether, and the billing office receives the charges electronically and in real time.

Pima Heart in Tucson, Arizona employs pMD’s mobile charge capture software, which allows physicians to enter their medical billing charges into their smartphones and send text messages securely to record and manage their hospital billing and outpatient procedures. Billing for cardiology test interpretations can be challenging because they are a high volume, low reimbursement service and therefore require a highly efficient billing process to be profitable. To solve this challenge, pMD worked with cardiology groups to create a standard feed directly from the cardiology systems in which they submit reports for ECGs, echos, and stress tests.

"The biggest benefit of the pMD ORU interface for us is that the physicians don't have to do anything,” said Jeremy Monday, a certified coder at Pima Heart. “They read the test, sign off on it, and then the charges flow directly to our billing system. This makes it easy for us to process high volume, low reimbursement procedures such as ECGs, echos, and stress tests."
