William Spencer to Retire as Editor of 'Priscilla Papers'
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Dr. William D. Spencer will retire as editor of Christians for Biblical Equality’s (CBE) academic journal, ‘Priscilla Papers,’ at the end of August, 2014. Under Dr. Spencer’s leadership, ‘Priscilla Papers’ has won ten publishing awards.
“For nearly ten years, Dr. Spencer has infused ‘Priscilla Papers’ with his love of the arts and meticulous theological acumen,” stated Dr. Mimi Haddad, CBE’s president. “In his tenure, Dr. Spencer’s dedication to scriptural truth, positive dialogue, and global scholarship has laid the foundation to expand the readership of ‘Priscilla Papers.’ His work has set a standard of excellence and enabled CBE’s mission and ministry to reach libraries on every continent. Words cannot express the gratitude that CBE has for him.”
One of Dr. Spencer’s goals as publisher of ‘Priscilla Papers’ was to increase accessibility. In pursuing this goal, Dr. Spencer began incorporating art, poetry, and unique cover images for each issue. Dr. Spencer also worked to mentor and publish student authors alongside the diverse team of authors that he built over the years.
Dr. Spencer has incorporated international issues and the challenge of abuse as regular topics. These publishing goals have brought a focus on healing, solace, and reconciliation to both ‘Priscilla Papers’ and CBE. This has helped connect CBE with key ministry partners around the world and helped bring greater diversity and depth of understanding on a Christian worldview to ‘Priscilla Papers.’
Through all of this, Dr. Spencer sought a positive and constructive tone. These efforts helped ‘Priscilla Papers’ become a unique mixture of strong, academically focused materials flowing through an accessible genre.
“One of the things that most impresses me about Dr. Spencer is his dedication to this work,” noted Dr. Haddad. “He truly speaks, writes, and publishes what he believes, and he constantly labors to encourage men and women to work together as equal co-laborers in Christ.”
Dr. Spencer is professor of theology and the arts at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and has been editor of ‘Priscilla Papers’ since 2004. He also serves as director of the Athanasian Teaching Scholars Program, co-director of the Africanus Guild PhD Support Program, co-editor of ‘Africanus Journal,’ and co-producer of the House of Prisca and Aquila Series (Wipf and Stock Publishers).
Dr. Spencer has published 13 books and nearly 200 articles, stories, reviews, and poems. Dr. Spencer is the founder of Pilgrim Church in Beverly, MA where he voluntarily serves as pastor of encouragement. Dr. Spencer is married to the Rev. Dr. Aida Besançon Spencer, who is professor of the New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and assistant to ‘Priscilla Papers’ editorial staff.
Dr. Spencer will finish his 10 year tenure as editor with the publication of the 2014 summer issue and will be succeeded by Dr. Jeff Miller.
Dr. Miller is the Vera Britton Chair of Bible and professor of Bible and ministry at Milligan College in northeast Tennessee. He first worked with CBE at CBE’s 2007 conference in Bangalore, India. Since that time, he has attended CBE conferences, written articles for CBE’s publications, and served as a regular contributor to CBE’s blog.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online book service, and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
