Greenheart Travel Joins Coalition to Double Number of Students Who Study Abroad by 2020
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 04, 2014 -- Greenheart Travel, a cultural exchange organization based in Chicago, has pledged to join the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Generation Study Abroad initiative to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade. Greenheart Travel is among the leading partners who have committed to specific, measurable actions that will help reach the initiative’s goal of 600,000 study abroad participants. Currently, fewer than 10 percent of all U.S. college students study abroad at some point in their academic career.
Greenheart Travel has committed to tripling the number of high school and university students that travel on its programs by 2017, by creating new study abroad opportunities for students and educators, as well as unique service learning and leadership development programs. Additionally, new scholarships and resources will make Greenheart Travel study abroad programs more accessible than ever for students.
“We care deeply about investing in the next generation of leaders and shaping their understanding of important global causes,” says Kyle Trebotich, Director of Greenheart Travel. “As we continue developing opportunities with the needs of students and educators in mind, we are excited to join Generation Study Abroad and connect to this strong network.”
Leading up to IIE’s centennial celebration in 2019, Generation Study Abroad strives to drive meaningful, innovative action to increase the number of U.S. students who have the opportunity to gain international experience through academic study abroad programs. More than 150 higher education institutions from 41 U.S. states have already signed the Generation Study Abroad commitment. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, several foreign governments, as well as key higher education associations and study abroad provider organizations, have also pledged to support the goals of the initiative.
Greenheart Travel, a branch of the global nonprofit Greenheart International, partners with organizations and governments overseas that empower their local communities through experiential learning and practical development. Through participation in these programs, student travelers develop a global awareness and cross-cultural understanding, which enhances their college education and prepares them for a career in an increasingly interconnected world.
