According to BBC News article, dated 5 July: Germany spying: US envoy summoned after arrest, the US ambassador in Berlin has been summoned by German authorities. This was after an incident where a man was caught under the suspicion of spying. The American diplomat was called in to help solve the case swiftly according to the statement released by the foreign ministry. The arrest was officially confirmed, according to official channels in Germany, with no additional details disclosed.
This another incident that increased tension on the already strained relations between the U.S. and Germany, after last year’s discovery that the US National Security Agency (NSA) wired Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone as part of their surveillance project. The scale of NSA’s activity and its worldwide spy program was disclosed in documents released by a former intelligence employee, Edward Snowden. According to Stephen Evans, the BBC’s correspondent, another incident of this magnitude will make it difficult for the U.S. to get support from Germany in regard to conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Russia’s activity in the region, as well as to stifle Iran’s goal of producing nuclear weapons.
