Oaks Christian Online High School Launches New, UC Approved Online Biology Course
Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) August 02, 2014 -- Anne Mangahas has been working for Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) as a subject matter expert for the past year and during that time she has written a new, UC approved Biology course that she will teach this fall. Approved labs for online high school science courses are new this year for the University of California A-G high school requirements. OCO has followed the UC guidelines for approved lab sciences in order to offer this course. Students who have fulfilled their A-G requirements are more likely to be prepared for attending rigorous universities such as those in the University of California system. Ms. Mangahas hopes that she can integrate a true classroom experience in the new online high school course through home and on-campus labs and live, online web-conference sessions. Students who are remote from the Oaks Christian campus in Westlake Village, CA, will have the option to purchase a lab kit and perform their labs in front of a local teacher or counselor to receive the UC lab science credit.
Anne came to the online high school as a highly-qualified subject matter expert. She holds master’s degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from USC and the Philosophy of Science from Biola. She is also working to complete her Ed.D. in Education from Azusa Pacific University and is researching ways to improve online education. Besides conducting scientific research at the USC Keck School of Medicine, Anne has also taught high school college preparatory, honors and Advanced Placement Biology and Chemistry courses, as well as college-level Biology 1 and 2. This summer, Anne is teaching for UC Irvine's COSMOS program, a residential summer school program for gifted students in the state of California who conduct their own research in the areas of Math, Engineering and Science.
Through her teaching experience in high schools and college, Ms. Managahas knows that even top-level students need motivation to study hard sciences. She has planned for course check-points and rapport building activities. She knows that new teaching methodologies such as online distance learning, flipped teaching and blended classrooms are the future, but these opportunities need to be balanced with real human interaction. She says, “I think my role is to prepare students for the society they will live in. Oaks Christian has that vision, and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”
