ATLANTA, GA (PRWEB) August 01, 2014
Ernest Greer was recently awarded the prestigious Sankofa Award by the National Bar Association (NBA) during its 2014 convention in Atlanta. The NBA presents the Sankofa Award to individuals who have distinguished themselves by empowering the futures of youth through efforts to make a quality education accessible to all. The award itself represents the old African adage, “Always remember the past for therein lies the future.”
Greer, chairman of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, a vice president of Greenberg Traurig, LLP and co-managing shareholder of the international law firm’s Atlanta office, graciously accepted the award from NBA President Patricia Rosier during The Opening Awards Program. The program was hosted at the historic Fox Theatre on Monday evening and kicks off the beginning of the NBA Annual convention. Also receiving a 2014 Sankofa Award during the 89th annual NBA convention, were Steve Harvey, Walmart and television judge Greg Mathis. The NBA is the oldest and largest organization of African American lawyers, judges, and law students in the United States.
Greer noted that “recognition of this caliber is a rare opportunity; therefore I’m extremely honored to be a Sankofa Award recipient among my peers and colleagues within the NBA. It is a privilege not only to be chosen to receive such an esteemed award, but to be recognized for an endeavor I’ve been passionate about my entire career. Education is one of the most important issues facing young people today, and I remain committed to upholding this honor by continuing to support education-related efforts throughout the remainder of my professional life.”
In addition to his roles as a Vice President and Co-Managing Shareholder of the Atlanta office, Greer serves on Greenberg Traurig’s executive committee and co-chairs the U.S. Strategic Committee. He is the first attorney chairman of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta, among other designations. In 2014, he has received awards and distinctions including Gate City Bar's "A. T. Walden Outstanding Lawyer" Award, James magazine’s "100 Most Influential Georgians," and the Atlanta Hawks African-American Trailblazer Award.
