The 2014 Construction Technology Report Reveals New Trends and Concerns in Construction Technology
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 01, 2014 -- Over 1,000 construction industry professionals completed the third annual Construction Technology Report survey. The results were revealed this morning at the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) IT Forum in Chicago by keynote speaker James Benham, President of JBKnowledge, Inc. This year’s CT Report is powered by technology consultant and solutions provider to the construction and insurance industries, JBKnowledge, in partnership with the Construction Financial Management Association and Texas A&M University’s Construction Science Department.
53.9% of the builders who completed the survey are employed by companies with 100 or more employees and 55.6% of survey participants are employed by companies building over $50 million in projects annually, resulting in a unique perspective into the technology strategies of construction companies of all sizes. Participants provided invaluable insight by answering questions about their firm’s information technology staffing, budgeting, outsourcing, R&D, and cloud solutions used throughout the building process.
“For the third year in a row, the survey highlighted a growing interest in mobile technologies, but revealed that most companies continue to lack the infrastructure to integrate mobile with desktop strategies. Survey answers uncovered an awkward mix of personal devices being used without establishing proper data security policies and the continuous lack of technology providers offering mobile capabilities for their construction solutions,” added Benham.
After discussing the technologies builders are currently using, Benham detailed the technologies builders are lacking. Among the processes, builders used software least often for subcontractor prequalification and client relationship management, two areas increasingly critical to project success. Additionally, the number of survey participants continuing to use spreadsheets for core project functions was a repeated concern for the third year in a row.
“When we first conducted this market research in 2012, the question was whether companies, especially smaller builders, were willing to go paperless and in the cloud. This year, the question is whether builders will go spreadsheet-less any time soon,” Benham noted.
Towards the end of his presentation, Benham went on to discuss emerging technologies builders have to look forward to and the research some companies are already conducting.
“We have survey participants testing out virtual reality headsets, flyable drones, and stating that tablets in all foreman’s hands is a goal for job sites in 2015. These are exciting developments. I hope the Construction Technology Report provides builders insight into what their peers are doing, and helps them find a competitive advantage. Construction technology providers will also discover some fuel for the development fire in this report - I know our company did,” concluded Benham.
