The Turnaround is used in many styles of music. The Blues Turnaround or V, VI, I (5-4-1) Turnaround came from the Ragtime Blues era. The cadence of the Blues Turnaround is backwards from traditional western music. The job of the Blues Turnaround is to show the listener where the chord progression ends and starts over, it does this by ending on the V (five) of the chord progression making it want to resolve back to the I (one).

Jon demonstrates this jazz chord progression with walking bass line in the key of F as follows; starting on the 8th fret of the 5th string with an F7 chord, Jon picks the root note first and then the rest of the chord. Next is D7#9 (D seven sharp nine) to a G13 and finally to F13 to make the progression resolve. MacLennan picks the note a half step above the root before each chord to incorporate the walking bass line. Guitar tabs are available for this cool jazz rhythm guitar lesson at GuitarControl.com.
