Hall-of-Fame quarterback Jim Kelly did more than just flip a coin during the first NFL preseason game Aug. 3 – he helped raise awareness about jaw cancer, which the former Buffalo Bill has been battling for a year.

Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Ventura County, Calif, and the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP) hope to capitalize on the public’s interest in Kelly and his battle with upper jaw bone cancer.

Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are prosthodontists, specialized dentist with advanced training in oral health issues as well as top cosmetic dentists.

To help patients better understand how prosthodontists apply their advanced training to help jawbone cancer patients like Kelly, the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) has produced a broadcast-quality video called Digital Dentistry. This 4-minute video shows how prosthodontists use current and new technology to improve patient outcomes. It features Sylvia, an upper jaw bone cancer survivor, and shows how her prosthodontist helps patients with a similar cancer regain normal function and the ability to chew, swallow and speak.

Sylvia required an obturator prosthesis, which replaced all of the teeth on the top of her mouth, including her hard palate and associated soft tissue.

According to an article on Kelly’s treatment, doctors made him a removable prosthesis of six teeth and part of his jaw to fill in the hole left after removing the cancerous area.

“For these types of procedures, you need a prosthodontist to be the quarterback of your medical team,” Dr. Jivraj said. “Fewer than 2 percent of all dentists in the world have the training required to manage all of the needs for such a massive treatment.”
