Top Teeth-Replacement Experts Offer 3 Tips For Deciding How to Repair One or More Broken Teeth
WOODLAND HILLS, CA (PRWEB) August 13, 2014 -- A rookie New York City police officer was punched in the face during a failed drug arrest last month, resulting in several broken teeth, according to a July 21st report by the New York Times. While the circumstances were unusual, the results were no surprise to Dr. Mamaly Reshad and Dr. Saj Jivraj of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute.
“Trauma is one of the three most-common causes of broken teeth, along with chewing hard foods and grinding your teeth,” Dr. Reshad said.
The pair, who offer Ventura cosmetic dental procedures and dental implants, are prosthodontists and, as such, two of the top experts in the world on replacing teeth.
Fully healthy teeth can break, especially as the result of trauma, but the risk increases if the teeth already have large fillings or crowns, or noticeable cracks.
As such, Dr. Reshad and Dr. Jivraj offer these three tips to anyone who may have a broken tooth:
1. If the break is small, a dentist may be able to repair it with a filling. If the break is in the cusp, or raised, portion at the top of a tooth, the dentist may have to use a crown or onlay.
2. If the break extends into the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth) but doesn’t extend below the gumline, then a dentist can save the tooth with a root canal.
3. If the break extends below the gum line, whether starting at the crown or beginning in the root, the tooth likely will have to come out.
“A prosthodontist will be able to give the widest array of solutions for dealing with your cracked tooth and options if it has to come out,” Dr. Jivraj said.
