Truckload Carriers Association Announces 2014-15 Scholarship Winners
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) August 05, 2014 -- Thirty college students will receive scholarships from the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Scholarship Fund for the 2014-15 academic year. The fund has been providing assistance to students associated with the truckload industry since 1973. Out of approximately $90,000, this year’s scholarships have been broken down into amounts ranging from $2,725 to $6,250.
Each of the winners is either entering or already a student in good standing at a four-year college or university. He or she is also associated with a TCA member company as an employee, independent contractor, or the child, grandchild, or spouse of an employee or independent contractor. Additionally, each recipient has shown financial need and scholastic achievement, maintained full-time student status, and demonstrated that he or she is an individual of high character and integrity. The TCA Scholarship Fund awards its scholarships without regard to sex, race, color, national origin, or religion.
Among this year’s awards are the Past Chairman John Kaburick Scholarship and the Darrell “Clark” Wilson, Jr, Memorial Scholarship, both of which were established this year in memory of their namesakes.
Kalie Snyder or Mars, Pennsylvania, will receive the $4,500 Kaburick award. Her connection to the trucking industry is through her father, who works for Wabash National Corporation of Lafayette, Indiana.
The Kaburick scholarship is the first of many that will be endowed by the Past Chairmen’s Fund, a new program that seeks to name a scholarship after each of TCA’s past chairmen. The idea for the fund, which was launched at TCA’s Annual Convention this year, came from Mark Kessler, senior vice president of PeopleNet of Minnetonka, Minnesota.
When the Past Chairmen’s Fund was established, Josh Kaburick, chairman of the TCA Scholarship Fund and president of Earl L. Henderson Trucking Company of Salem, Illinois, made a donation in his father’s name, taking the first step toward founding John’s namesake scholarship. A short time later, the trucking industry was saddened to learn that John had passed away. TCA members were encouraged to honor him by making donations in his name to the new program and over the next six days, enough money was raised to take the grand total above the $50,000 needed to fully endow the scholarship.
“I’ve always been proud of the trucking industry’s generosity, but this year I’m grateful as well,” said Josh Kaburick. “Together, we’re helping 30 truckload families, and one of them will benefit from a scholarship named after my father. He worked hard to support the men and women of this industry, and he’d be happy to know that he’s still lending a hand.”
Brittany Neyman of Lawrence, Kansas, is the winner of the $3,250 Darrell “Clark” Wilson, Jr., Memorial Scholarship. She works as a professional truck driver for Hill Brothers Transportation, Inc., of Omaha, Nebraska.
The Wilson scholarship was founded shortly after TCA’s 2014 Annual Convention. Darrell Wilson, the father of the young man after whom the award is named, learned about the association’s long-running scholarship program during the meeting. He contacted TCA once it was over and fully endowed the scholarship, making it possible for a truckload family to benefit this year.
“My hope for the scholarship is that it goes to someone who is truly deserving,” said Wilson, who is the president of Wil-Trans of Springfield, Missouri. “I would like each winner to be someone who can make the most of it.”
