Second largest in the nation, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) enrolls more than 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, at over 900 schools. The boundaries spread over 720 square miles and include the mega-city of Los Angeles as well as all or parts of 31 smaller municipalities, plus several unincorporated sections of Southern California.
With over 18,000 buildings in the LAUSD school system, capacity planning is a big job that requires accuracy and transparency. The capacity planning process at LAUSD has traditionally been a face-to-face endeavor: central planning personnel would travel to regional facilities to meet with the principals and then delineate space utilization information.
