Ektio Shoes Releases Data Demonstrating a Dramatic Reduction in Ankle Sprains Among Users
New York (PRWEB) August 07, 2014 -- Armed with four years of data, Ektio – makers of basketball shoes with revolutionary ankle support technology – announced that people who wear their shoes have an incredible 99 % reduction in the incidence of ankle sprains. The claim is based on anticipated ankle sprains taken from historic medical data and matched with the number of Ektio customers who have reported sprains.
Approximately 25,000 people in the US each day suffer an ankle sprain, costing roughly $2 billion/year in healthcare dollars. Nowhere is the injury more prevalent than the sport of basketball. Ankle sprains account for 42% percent of all basketball injuries, and account for 78,000 injuries in high school basketball alone.
“These results show that people who play basketball can significantly reduce their potential for ankle sprains by wearing a shoe that is specifically designed to minimize those injuries,” said Dr. Barry Katz, Ektio founder. “We designed these shoes with one goal in mind – to change ankle sprains from being a part of life as a basketball player to a preventable injury.”
The shoes use a patented system of straps, a built-in bracing mechanism, and a series of outriggers along the edge of the shoe to prevent this injury. The Ektio design prevents the ankle from inverting beyond the natural range of motion, and prevents rollovers when an athlete lands awkwardly.
Our percent reduction of ankle sprains was calculated through evaluating the number of sprains occurring divided by the expected number of sprains while wearing Ektio shoes. The latter was calculated with an assumption of 6 hours of play per week. Previous studies in Sweden have shown that there are 5.5 ankle sprains per 1000 hours of basketball play. We have had over a 99% reduction in the expected number of sprains since our launch in 2010.
As Dr. Katz said while explaining the data, “ankle sprains are now optional, the choice is yours.”
