Effective May 2014, all CDL drivers have to get their medical certification from FMCSA certified Medical Examiner. Any and all drivers can walk in to Primary Care Walk In Clinic in New Port Richey or Spring Hill, Florida, pay $100 fee and get their initial medical certificate or recertification.

Primary care walk in Clinic had been performing DOT Physicals for a long time. Gunwant S Dhaliwal, MD, Board Certified Internist, in practice for over 20 years, is one of the few that got certified by FMCSA to perform DOT physicals. Any and all CDL Driver Medical Certificates issued by physicians that are not FMCSA certified medical examiners and do not bear Registration number, are not valid after May 21st, 2014. Such drivers need to have their DOT Physical done again.

The DOT medical certificate is valid for 2 years if there are no medical conditions. Otherwise it is for one year if there are medical problems such as controlled hypertension with medicine or diabetic on oral medications. In case of mild to moderate uncontrolled blood pressure, a temporary medical certificate for 3 months may be given. When blood pressure is controlled with medicine, one year certificate may be issued. Same is for being diabetic though there are different rules for drivers that take Insulin.

The $100 fee for DOT physical is charged upfront and that includes in-office urine test for pH, protein, sugar and blood. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to perform the exam. Medical certificate could be denied due to any conditions that are also listed on the website.

The medical certificates are printed from FMCSA site and driver's information is entered in to the DOT database. The certificate bears the Certified Medical Examiner’s registration number.

The business owners such as trucking companies can arrange to have their drivers medically certified by sending their drivers to one of the offices of Primary Care Walk In Clinic or conveniently at their place of business (located in Tampa Bay area) by paying $3750 per day in advance for up to 25 drivers.
