Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C spreads through blood contact. This happens most commonly when people share needles used for intravenous drugs. People who have received a blood transfusion or organ transplant before 1993, blood-clotting products prior to 1987 or long-term hemodialysis, may be at risk for the Hep C virus. People who work in hospitals and emergency workers may get accidentally pricked with a needle and become infected. Hepatitis C can also be spread through sexual activity. The risk of sexual transmission is higher if you have had more than one sex partner.
Most people who have Hep C don’t feel anything at all. Some people may come down with flu symptoms and feel belly discomfort, lose their appetite, may vomit, feel tired, lose weight and sometimes appear “jaundiced” (this means that they look a little yellow in their eyes and skin). Untreated Hepatitis C can lead to eventual liver disease, liver cancer and death.
Finding out that one has Hep C is very important, as new, more effective treatments are now available. There are also things that one can do to make sure one’s liver doesn’t get worse and that the virus isn’t spread to other people.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that anyone who has ever used IV drugs, anyone born between 1945 and 1965, or anyone that has any of the other risk factors noted above should get screened for Hepatitis C.
