‘Braving the Wartime Seas’ by The American Maritime History Project shares U.S. Merchant Marine's role in World War II

The U. S. Merchant Marine during World War II was the Fourth Arm of National Defense that bridged the oceans to provide armament, fuel and logistic supplies to the Allied Navies and Armies. It suffered tremendous losses; by percentages, more merchant mariners died than those who served in the U.S. Navy or Army. Many of those who died were still students, Cadet-Midshipmen from the Merchant Marine Academy, as well as recent graduates.

Braving the Wartime Seas” (published by Xlibris) by The American Maritime History Project honors the short lives of men from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and the history of training these young men to become officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine. It serves as a tribute to the men who died in World War II while serving as U.S. Maritime Commission Cadets, Cadet Officers, Cadet-Midshipmen, or as officers on merchant ships or in military service after finishing any of these training programs.

“Braving the Wartime Seas” brings out the story of the role of the U. S. Merchant Marine during World War II and the losses by families of the young men who volunteered to serve. According to the author, history must be known and remembered in order for public and government understanding and forthcoming policies regarding the role of the need for the U. S. Merchant Marine take place.
