Robin Williams Suicide Highlights Connection Between Addiction and Depression, Warns Lakeview Health Medical Leadership
Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) August 13, 2014 -- Dr. Kevin Holbert, Chief of Staff at addiction treatment center Lakeview Health, has spoken out on the recent passing of comedian and actor Robin Williams. An August 12, 2014 article by Fox News cited that alcoholism was a daily struggle and that the Oscar Winner struggled with depression and survivor’s guilt from the loss of close friends Christopher Reeve, Andy Kaufman and John Belushi.
“It isn't commonly known but addiction and mental health are often strongly linked,” stated Dr. Holbert. “We call this Dual Diagnosis and believe that recognizing and having a specialized program for these cases is critical to successful treatment.”
Dual Diagnosis occurs when a patient struggles with both a mental health disorder and an alcohol or drug addiction. Addicted individuals may also struggle with disorders that include depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or personality disorders without their knowledge. Over time, the lack of treatment for one condition can exacerbate the other.
“Robin Williams’ suicide again highlights that co-occurring disorders are chronic and can become acute even after decades of successful management,” Dr. Holbert continued. “Advancement for the treatment of dual diagnosis is complicated and while significant gains have been made in recent years, we must continue to build awareness and innovate.”
Mental health disorders have symptoms that can be difficult to manage and those with addiction use alcohol and drugs to self-medicate the disorder. Drug and alcohol use offer temporary relief from psychological symptoms. However, it will ultimately make the mental health issue worse. Significant distress in an occupation, relationships, finances and physical health are common in those who have a dual diagnosis. The lack of stability in mood and substance abuse make it almost impossible to regain control of his or her life.
