To support the growth of its progressive online Master of Arts in Communication, Queens University of Charlotte’s Knight School of Communication has expanded the program’s faculty to include two additional instructors. The new faculty members, who will begin teaching in the fall term starting August 25, each bring distinct expertise and accomplishments from growing disciplines within contemporary communication, in keeping with the Knight School’s charge to empower students to succeed in their communication efforts across industries in an increasingly connected, interactive and visual world.
Stavroula Kalogeras, Ph.D., will moderate the course Creativity and Networks. Dr. Kalogeras has leveraged her experience working in marketing communications for leading entertainment organizations to develop her professional research interests in narrative instruction and emotional engagement to improve learning and retention. She recently published the book "Transmedia Storytelling and the New Era of Media Convergence in Higher Education" as well as two articles on the use of storytelling and the convergence of media and education in the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education.
“I am very excited to be moderating this course because it explores forward-looking approaches to innovation in the contemporary media landscape,” said Kalogeras. “The course explores passion and innovation in the hyper-connected marketplace, using digital tools and social networks to build connectivity and drive innovation, and will assist learners in the planning for strategic communication, and the application of social theory to professional practice. Both the course content and the delivery method align with my experience and passion for moderating innovative media courses via multiplatform pedagogy and delivery.”
Teaching the course Communication Fluency will be Tracy Schaffer, Ph.D., whose research focuses on mental health literacy, health narratives, addiction, social support, self-efficacy, and family systems. Dr. Schaffer won the Morton Dissertation Award for the top dissertation and the Department of Communication Award at the University of Memphis for her dissertation titled, “The Experience of the Addiction-Affected Family: A Communication Based Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.”
“I am extremely excited to join the team at Queens and look forward to the energetic and dynamic environment online education provides,” said Dr. Schaffer. “My teaching philosophy is that every student has unlimited potential and my job is to help them realize that potential. My goal is to encourage students to take the theories discussed in class and apply them to their professional careers.”
The Knight School of Communication at Queens also recently welcomed Elizabeth Stephens, Ph.D., who began teaching during the summer 2014 term. Dr. Stephens’ research examines communication in health contexts. She is a previous recipient of the John Angus Campbell Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Memphis.

The MA in Communication program at Queens offers a progressive curriculum redesigned in 2012 to address how effective communication shapes successful strategies, structures and processes in today’s organizations and society. The program expanded to include a 100-percent online option in fall 2013. Course work and assignments are designed to provide instant, real-world applicability and expose students to the most current theory and best practices in the field.
