Sierra College Seeks Sponsors for NEW Girls in STEM Event
Rocklin, CA (PRWEB) August 15, 2014 -- To attract young women to STEM education paths leading to highly-paid, in-demand technical careers with employers in the Sacramento region, Sierra College seeks sponsors for the second Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) event on October 17 at the Rocklin CA campus. Over 100 female students from Placer and Nevada County high Schools are expected to visit labs, meet mentors, work on hands-on projects that they can take home and hear motivational presentations on career opportunities.
The goal of this event is help fill the anticipated demand for skilled employees explained Carol Pepper-Kittredge, CACT Director, Sierra College. “If we can encourage high school girls to continue their education in nontraditional pathways, employers will gain a diverse source of 21st Century designers, fabricators, customer solution-finders and technical innovators.”
Sponsors can support the NEW event at various levels ranging from $100 to $1500 that will make it possible to provide t-shirts, bus transportation, lunch and overall event support. They will be recognized in publicity, on T-shirts, with recognition at the opening event, and VIP’s can visit labs and attend sessions. Sierra College offers many Career Technical Education certificates and degrees leading to advanced manufacturing and other fields according to Darlene Jackson, Associate Dean, Business & Technology, Sierra College. “Participants will have a choice of visiting Welding, Mechatronics, Engineering, Construction & Energy Technology, Entrepreneurship - Marketing, Applied Art & Design, and Drafting & Engineering Support,” said Jackson. “The NEW event will introduce girls to faculty, let them check out the labs, meet mentors and make a project that will build their confidence that they can successfully pursue STEM careers.”
Last year, girls who participated previously reported: “It changed my thinking because now I am very interested in Engineering and Architecture,” “I thought I could do only certain jobs but now I know that I can also do physically and mentally challenging jobs,” and “It gave me a chance to try something in a comfortable setting.”
