GJEL Partners with Local Bike Shops for Children’s Helmet Giveaway
Orinda, CA (PRWEB) August 19, 2014 -- GJEL Accident Attorneys, a Northern California law firm specializing in personal injury cases, is once again partnering with five local bike retailers to provide free helmets as part of a back to school campaign designed to promote bike safety.
From Monday, August 18th through Sunday, August 31st, every bike purchased by—or on behalf of—someone under the age of 18 will receive a complimentary helmet (up to $40 value) included with their purchase.
The bike shops participating in the promotion are: Street Level Cycles in Berkeley, Bay Area Bikes in Oakland, Livermore Cyclery in Livermore, Eden Bicycles in Castro Valley, and Alameda Bicycle in Alamada.
Although the statistics are occasionally disputed by anti-helmet cyclists, it’s estimated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that wearing a helmet can reduce head injury risk by as much as 85 percent. Additionally, each year, the overwhelming majority of cycling deaths that occur involve riders who were not wearing a helmet at the time of their crash.
California’s Youth Bicycle Helmet Law requires all cyclists under the age of 18 to wear a helmet, however, according to the CDC only 25 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 14 wear their helmet whenever they ride their bike.
“Because wearing a helmet is one of the single easiest things a cyclist can do to reduce the risk of head trauma, we want to encourage kids to wear a helmet every single time they get on their bike,” said GJEL partner Andy Gillin. “We think it is essential riders are taught from an early age that wearing a helmet is standard equipment, not an optional accessory.”
GJEL hopes the promotion will ultimately result in the donation of between 100 and 150 helmets for children in the Bay Area.
