MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROFESSOR SEES KEY RESEARCH STUDIES PUBLISHED
During her three-year tenure at Trident University, Dr. Qin Sun has served as a driver behind studies that have led to seven published papers. Most recently, she co-authored the paper “Ethnocentrism and Country of Origin Effects among Immigrant Consumers” with Dr. Mohammad Ali Zolfagharian and Ph.D. candidate Robert Saldivar of the University of Texas - Pan American, which appears in the Journal of Consumer Marketing (Issue 31, number 1). Other recent papers include a study on online learning effectiveness accepted by the Journal of Education for Business and a comparative study on the effectiveness of online classes versus face-to-face classes, which has been accepted by the Marketing Education Review. Dr. Sun is Faculty Lead for the MBA Marketing and Entrepreneurship degree programs.
FACULTY LEAD SELECTED AS A FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR SPECIALIST
Dr. Belal Kaifi, Faculty Lead for Undergraduate Programs in the College of Business Administration, was selected as a Fulbright Scholar Specialist by the Fulbright Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. As an educational consultant and diplomat, Dr. Kaifi spent a month in Saudi Arabia where he assisted several universities with curriculum development, accreditation planning, and faculty trainings.
FACULTY LEAD CO-AUTHORS PUBLISHED PAPER WITH FORMER STUDENT
Dr. Joshua Shackman, working with Trident alum Dr. Theresa Gun, recently co-authored the paper, "A comparative analysis of the implications of the Islamic religion on corporate capital structures of firms in emerging market countries,” which appeared in International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management (Vol. 7, Issue 3). Dr. Shackman is a Faculty Lead of Undergraduate Programs in the College of Business Administration, and Dr. Gunn teaches at Alfred University in Alfred, NY.
PROFESSOR SEES WORK PUBLISHED, PRESENTS AT CONFERENCE
Undergraduate Programs Faculty Member Dr. Sara Garski recently published the article, “Co-Creation of Value with Consumers,” in the Open Journal of Business Management. In April, she presented on “Sustainability of Transportation in Nonprofit Human Service Organizations” at the Center for Scholastic Inquiry Conference in San Francisco.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROFESSOR PUBLISHES BOOK
Dr. Nicholas V. Vakkur just published the book, "Corporate Governance Regulation: How Poor Management is Destroying the Global Economy" (Wiley, 2013), alongside co-author Zulma J. Herrera. Dr. Vakkar is a faculty member in the College of Business Administration.

FACULTY MEMBERS LAUNCH PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL
Trident faculty members founded The International Journal of Safety Education and Research, which is an open, peer-reviewed, online scholarly journal that is focused on safety education and empirical research. Edited by faculty member Dr. Michael J. Wesolek, the journal will contain peer-reviewed manuscripts and an editorial section where best practices can be published. This new safety journal has a very diverse editorial board with members from universities, government, and industry. It will supplement Trident’s new Safety Management Training concentration in the Master of Arts in Education program, as well as the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree options that focus on Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety.

TRIDENT DEAN APPOINTED AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL FOR APHA’S EDUCATION BOARD
Dr. Holly Orozco, Dean of the College of Health Sciences and the College of Education, has just been appointed by the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association (APHA) to serve on the Education Board for a two-year term, beginning in November 2014. Members of the APHA board are experts in their field selected for their broad knowledge of public sciences and familiarity with distance education.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM CONTINUES CEPH ACCREDITATION PROCESS
Trident’s College of Health Sciences continues work towards accreditation from Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for its Bachelor’s of Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health degree program. Dr. Holly Orozco, Dean of the College of Health Sciences and the College of Education, and Dr. Patricia Rhynders, Program Director of Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree program, participated in an invitation-only workshop in Washington, D.C. Trident is the only 100% online institution being considered for public health accreditation for a stand-alone bachelor degree program.
FACULTY MEMBER TO PRESENT AT AMERICAN PUBLIC HEALTH ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
Dr. Tunde Akinmoladun, faculty member in the College of Health Sciences, will be presenting research at the American Public Health Association’s 142nd Annual Meeting and Exposition in November. This is the premier public health conference in the country, as APHA is the only organization that influences federal policy, has a 140-plus year perspective, and brings together members from all fields of public health. Dr. Akinmoladun’s presentation, entitled "Making the Case for the Built Environment to Promote Wellness and Reduce Weight Gain,” is scheduled for November 18th, 2014.
FACULTY PART OF SELECT GROUP SET TO EXPAND USE OF THE DEGREE QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
Dr. Patricia Rhynders and Dr. Elna van Heerden, Director of Assessment, are two of only 40 faculty members nationwide who were selected to participate in the development of an Assignment Library intended to expand the usefulness of the Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) by demonstrating ways in which creatively crafted course assignments can be used to assess student proficiency. The Assignment Library initiative is being carried out by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) and is supported by Lumina Foundation for Education. The work is part of a broader DQP national implementation strategy.
HEALTH SCIENCES FACULTY MEMBER PUBLISHES PAPER WITH HIS SON FOR THIRD TIME
Dr. Narrad Beharry, faculty member in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program, just co-authored a publication with his son entitled, “Using Advanced Differential Equations to Determinate the Propagation of the Common Flu.” It is slated to be published this fall. He and his son have previously worked together on two other publications, “Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Florida – Part I: A Statewide Report” and “Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Florida – Part II: A Socio-economic and Hispanic Report,” both of which appeared in Florida Public Health Review in 2012.
FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AWARD
Dr. Welford C. Roberts, a College of Health Sciences faculty member since 2002, recently received the Walter S. Mangold Award from the National Environmental Health Association. Awarded during their Annual Educational Conference in Las Vegas on July 10th, 2014, this is the Association’s highest honor. The award recognizes superior achievement and attainment of the highest standards in the environmental health profession and was named in honor of Walter Mangold, a professor of public health and a member of the graduate faculty at the University of California, Berkeley.
BSHS PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S RESEARCH ON WOMEN’S HEALTH ISSUES TO BE PUBLISHED
The American Journal of Preventive Medicine has accepted the manuscript, "Providing Young Women with Credible Health Information about Bleeding Disorders,” which features Dr. Patricia Rhynders as the lead author, along with co-authors Cynthia A. Sayers, Dr. Rodney J. Presley, and Dr. JoAnn Thierry, all of whom are researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A publication date is pending.
EMERGENCY DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROFESSOR PUBLISHED IN HOMELAND SECURITY JOURNAL
Dr. Thomas B. Hunter recently saw two of his articles published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Counterterrorism and Homeland Security (Vol. 20, No. 2). The articles are, "Tripping the Switch: Domestic Terrorism Targeting the U.S. Power Grid" and "Israel and Counterterrorism Ops in the Mediterranean." Dr. Hunter handles Homeland Security courses within the Master of Science in Emergency Disaster Management program.

TRIDENT UNIVERSITY BECOMES A MEMBER OF CYBERWATCH WEST
Trident is now a member of CyberWatch West, a government-funded initiative to share and standardize resources among universities with a Cybersecurity program. Most member schools are WASC-accredited bodies located in the western United States. This affiliation is the result of work carried out by Dr. Indira Guzman, Program Director for the College of Information Systems at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education in San Diego earlier this year.
PROFESSOR AND PH.D. STUDENT TO PRESENT MULTIPLE PAPERS AT THE DSI CONFERENCE
Dr. Wendy Wang, Professor within the College of Information Systems, is slated to present work alongside Trident Ph.D. student Robert Schanke at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute. The conference runs from November 22-25th in Tampa, FL and will be the 45th meeting. Their two presentations include “The Impact of Group Cohesion Over Time” and “Impact of Engineered Labor Standards on Job Satisfaction.” Additionally, “Impact of Mobile Technology on Individual Performance and Group Cohesion” has been accepted as a conference paper.

ACADEMIC TEAM FROM TRIDENT TO PRESENT AT CONFERENCE ON ONLINE LEARNING
Trident will have a significant presence at the 20th Annual International Conference on Online Learning (formerly known as Sloan Consortium) in Lake Buena Vista, FL on October 29th-31st, 2014. In attendance will be Associate Provost Dr. Scott Amundsen, General Education Program Director Dr. Lisa Mohanty, and Student Success Counselor George del Hierro, who will be presenting their research study entitled, “Leveraging Traditional Retention Strategies to Meet Student Success Goals in an Online Environment.”
