The LifeBand Program, which recently opened its doors to join the fight against obesity, is pleased to announce the introduction of “same-day” Lap-Band® surgery in the state of Connecticut. The LifeBand Program, the first of its kind in Connecticut, conducted the procedure early last week with bariatric surgeon Dr. James Bonheur. Dr. Bonheur performed the minimally invasive procedure on an overweight young woman who had been struggling to lose weight for several years. The procedure took less then 60 minutes and the patient was ready to go home within two hours.
“Historically, weight loss surgery has been considered an option only for those patients considered to be ‘severely obese,' or who have been diagnosed with serious, weight-related health conditions,” says Dr. Bonheur, a Board Certified MD and certified Lap-Band® surgeon. “We are seeing a growing trend of healthier, overweight patients seeking out tools to help them lose weight when they don’t meet these traditional standards. Through the LifeBand Program, we’re able to provide greater access to these tools by offering the Lap-Band® procedure in a safe and affordable environment,” he added.
Currently, the Lap-Band® is FDA approved for use in patients with a BMI of 30 and above, or who are approximately 30 lbs. overweight. The LifeBand Program offers the procedure at a significant cost savings to would-be patients, and is paving the way for greater access to these treatments in the future. A traditional, hospital-based weight-loss procedure typically costs $5,000 - $15,000 more than The LifeBand Program.
“Affordable, minimally invasive outpatient procedures for the treatment of obesity are the wave of the future,” says Amanda Kilmartin, Director of The LifeBand Program. “Improvements in laparoscopic technology and the clinically proven safety of gastric banding surgery, make the outpatient setting not only possible, but preferable. As an added bonus, our patients get to experience personalized, top-quality care at a fraction of the typical cost,” she added.
The majority of healthy adults looking to lose 30 to 100 lbs. should be eligible for The LifeBand Program. Consultations by a Registered Dietician, Clinical Social Worker, and Primary and Specialty Care Physicians may be required based on the evaluation of the bariatric surgeon. Patients must also be committed to the life-long dietary changes and follow-up visits that are critical to the success of the surgery.
