Hunhu Healthcare Enters into Licensing Agreement with Mayo Clinic

Minneapolis-Based Startup to Deliver Social Wellness Platform That Emphasizes Benefits of Community-Based Healing

The Hunhu solution combines the latest in wearable technology, mobile devices and social networking to deliver support and peace of mind to vulnerable individuals—and their families—when they are experiencing health care needs.

Hunhu Healthcare, Inc., a Minneapolis-based provider of intelligent social wellness solutions, announced today that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Mayo Clinic to develop medical best practices, mobile technology and predictive analytics for recruiting, leveraging and managing its solution for online wellness communities.

According to Michael Emerson, co-founder and CEO of Hunhu Healthcare, the company has applied for two patents on the technology used in what he calls a social wellness solution, which is made up of a wearable pendant that detects movements (such as falls) and facilitates community conversations, an app for Android and Apple phones, a cloud-based database application, and a social networking platform.

An example of community-based support is seen in a 2014 study by the University of Manchester, which examined patients with long-term health challenges (specifically, congestive heart failure and diabetes) to assess how social interactions influenced health outcomes. Researchers found that:

  •     The more socially connected and involved a patient was, the more engaged they were in their care plan,
  •     Social networks expand in accordance with the needs of the individual (in other words: the more you need, the more you get), and
  •     Social support results in fairly dramatic cost savings, and those with a greater level of illness showed the best results.

According to Emerson, the Hunhu solution is expected to be available for purchase by adults in transition to early retirement years, and individuals who need extended help for themselves or a loved one, in the second quarter of 2015. The company plans for several field trials in the fall of this year.
