Mabey’s Panel Bridge System Provides Access to Dry Land Over Whitewater Course in ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships
McHenry, MD (PRWEB) August 25, 2014 -- Mabey Inc. has provided a 103-foot pedestrian bridge for site access at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championships to be held at The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) in Western Maryland on September 17-21. The ASCI facility is unique because it is the only mountaintop recirculating whitewater course in the world. Normally, this site operates as a venue for hundreds of whitewater rafting enthusiasts in the region. However, this year’s championships are said to bring a national audience of nearly 9,000 people from 35 countries to ASCI — creating logistical challenges. Executive Director Todd Copley from Deep Creek 2014, LLC comments:
“We knew getting our athletes and staff from point A to point B was going to be a challenge because of the magnitude of spectators at the event. We decided to build a direct route across the course using a temporary bridge.”
To help move athletes and staff safely and quickly across the course, Todd and his team chose to install the temporary bridge just downstream of the finish line. The Mabey Universal Bridge (built in sections like an erector set) was installed using a “lift-in method” where a crane picks up the entire structure and lays it down on top of prepared footings. Since the bridge will be in a prime location near the finish line, it will also hold the scoreboard for the event. Back in July, ASCI also used a 66-foot Mabey Universal Bridge to move equipment and vehicles during construction for the race.
Mabey’s temporary bridges are easily installed and provide safe transport for pedestrians and vehicles. Mabey bridges are versatile and can cover spans ranging from 20 feet to clear span capabilities of up to 300 feet in length for larger projects.
Mabey is proud to sponsor the ICF Championships and supply temporary bridges to ASCI. This is only the second time in the event’s 25-year history that it has been held in the United States. The winner who takes home the Gold is the athlete with the fastest time and the least number of penalties. Competitors must navigate their canoe or kayak through 300 meters of rapids in a track that consists of upstream and downstream patterns and maneuver around 15-20 gates without missing or touching them.
