Seattle, WA (PRWEB) August 21, 2014 -- Garvey Schubert Barer announced today that Sara P. Sandford has been named as Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Section of International Law. In her new role as Vice Chair, Sara Sandford, with the assistance of the Division Chairs, will supervise the work of the Section Committees and Task Forces. As Vice Chair, Ms. Sandford is also responsible for the strategic planning of events, programs and numerous other activities that take place each year.
According to Sara Sandford, “It’s a great honor to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity and to be able to collaborate with so many professionals around the world. It is not only an interesting and rewarding way to contribute to my profession, but also a wonderful chance to gain a wealth of experience, knowledge, and contacts for my clients.”
In her law practice at Garvey Schubert Barer, Ms. Sandford has had extensive experience working with clients in all stages of establishing, acquiring and operating businesses across borders. Her practice focuses on representing Japanese, Canadian and Chinese companies and individuals in their business activities in the U.S, and on advising U.S. clients concerning business activities in Japan, Canada, China and other Pacific Rim countries. Prior to being named as Vice Chair of the ABA/Section of International Law, Ms. Sandford has held other Section posts, including Finance Officer, that have given her a strong understanding for the internal, practical function of the organization. In her new position as Vice Chair, she will be heavily involved in the substantive side of the organization, particularly in program, publication and policy development.
Founded in 1933, the American Bar Association Section of International Law is a leader in the development of policy in the international arena, the promotion of the rule of law and the education of international law practitioners. It is the only ABA entity that focuses on the full range of international legal issues and is involved in a wide variety of substantive legal activities. To address its mission “to advance the rule of law in the world,” the Section has assigned over 60+ regional and special interest committees, task forces and working groups within twelve divisions to closely monitor and disseminate information on domestic and international policy developments that impact the practice of law on a global scale.
The Section's current membership of approximately 22,000 spans over 90 countries.
In addition to her experience with the ABA/Section of International Law, Ms. Sandford serves as a leader of Garvey Schubert Barer's International and Business Groups, and has served as the firm's Seattle office managing director. Ms. Sandford worked with the Japanese law firm of Matsuo & Kosugi in 1982 and again from 1986 to 1988. Ms. Sandford speaks, reads and writes Japanese, which gives her the unique ability to analyze and explain complex American and Japanese legal issues in both Japanese and English. She received her law degree from Columbia University and her undergraduate degree in Japan Regional Studies from the University of Washington. She is a frequent guest lecturer and has published extensively in peer-review legal publications and as well as in top-tier business magazines.
