Davron Indexing Conveyor Oven Automates Automotive Preheating Process
Chattanooga, Tennessee (PRWEB) August 25, 2014 -- Davron Technologies, Inc. designed and manufactured the DTI-898, an electrically heated indexing conveyor oven designed to preheat interior components for a Tier 1 automotive supplier. Prior to commissioning the DTI-898, Davron’s customer used pre-cut blanks and preheated the products’ component parts in two separate ovens. The DTI-898 indexing conveyor oven enables the user to pull product from rolls, cut blanks, and preheat the products simultaneously in the same oven, thereby reducing the labor, energy, and work-in-process needed for production.
The entire system consists of a roll transfer system with eight stations, two cut-to-length systems, and one dual conveyor system to move product through the process. Product is pulled from one of the eight stations and is cut to the appropriate blank size. The first conveyor system then transfers the products to the second conveying system that runs through the oven chambers. This process allows a preheated vehicle set to be produced and readied for press forming without ever being touched by an operator.
The DTI-898’s upper chamber is heated by two electric heaters and preheats product via forced air convection. The lower chamber utilizes infrared panels arranged in individual zones of control to allow for variation of heating across the entire surface of the product. The upper chamber can operate between 300⁰ and 500⁰F, while the lower chamber can operate between 280⁰ and 450⁰F.
Products are transferred from the cut-to-length system onto the oven conveying systems. After products are loaded onto the upper and lower conveying systems, they are indexed into the heated chambers. Products advance one position at a time and move through the heated chamber according to predetermined time and distance settings until the preheating cycle is complete. Once preheated, the products exit the ovens heated chambers simultaneously. They are then matched together to form a preheated vehicle set ready to be press formed into a single unit. The DTI-898 features PLC control and all motion functions are controlled by servo for accuracy and speed.
The usable dimensions of both heated chambers are 12’6” wide x 19’0” long. The interior of the oven is made out of 16-gauge aluminized steel backed by six inches of eight-pound density mineral wool insulation. The exterior is constructed of 16-gauge carbon steel backed by a structural steel frame and finished with high- temperature paint. The lower chamber features a removable drawer that houses the infrared panels. This drawer slides out of the oven to allow access to the IR panels for maintenance. The upper chamber includes six access doors on each side to provide access for maintenance and to ensure compliance with NFPA requirements.
Davron designed the DTI-898 indexing conveyor oven, including the complimentary roll transfer and cut-to-length system, based on several criteria provided by the customer: the product roll sizes, the blank sizes, the desired production rate per hour, and the temperature required to preheat. Once the indexing conveyor oven was manufactured, Davron did acceptance testing and training with the customer at Davron headquarters in Chattanooga, Tenn., prior to shipment. Davron then went on site to install the oven at the customer’s facility.
