“John Denver's Rocky Mountain Home”
In the 1970s, John Denver was one of the first crossover singers, appealing to rock, pop, and Country-Western followers. He was a major star taking his fans on trips down the “Country Roads” of West Virginia to visit his Mountain Mama and soar with “The Eagle and the Hawk” over the Rocky Mountains that he so loved. A “Rocky Mountain High” in Colorado was where he wanted to be and the inspiration behind so many of the 200 songs he wrote over his abbreviated lifetime.
The son of a stern, heavy drinking Air Force officer test pilot and constantly moving, Denver never felt like he belonged anywhere, including at home. It was the acoustic guitar that his grandmother gave him at the age of 11 where he found his talent. Denver wrote about his loves, his losses and the horrible impact of humans on the natural environment long before it became a popular subject. Coming of age during the 1960’s Flower Child movement, John became one of the biggest stars of the 1970s writing and singing his own songs, acting, television concerts and a five-time Grammy host. “Rocky Mountain High” was named a state song in 2007 by the Colorado state legislation. After a day visiting with his daughter and 18 holes of golf at the Bel Air Country Club in 1997, John took off in his amateur-built new prize aircraft Rutan Long-EZ and crashed into the Pacific Ocean at the age of 53.
The Colorado home that John and his wife, Annie, built in their beloved Aspen, with the Rocky Mountain views that inspired many of his songs, is now for sale. Before the house was built in the early 1970s, John and Annie found the perfect piece of land with the perfect view. It was all they could afford then, but later, with the huge success of his hit song, “Country Roads,” they started building their prize-winning redwood-and-glass contemporary dream home on their 7.6 acres. Over the years they kept adding until it now consists of 6,000 square feet, 11 bedrooms, 11 baths and a separate guest house divided from the main house by a small mountain stream with waterfall splashing down the hillside. Though the current owners have added a few things such as the hot tub off the kitchen and expanding the lawn area, they have retained the Denver personal touches of curving walls of stained glass in the master suite and custom woodwork. There are four indoor fireplaces, an outdoor fireplace-barbecue area, and pool and decks for enjoying the mountain and valley views. The guest house is where John had his music studio.
John Denver’s home of musical inspiration in Aspen, Colorado is now for sale and priced at $10.75 million. The listing agent is Carol Dopkin of Sotheby's International Realty.
