Water Advocate Sharon Kleyne Reports New Discoveries for Relief of Dry Dehydrated Skin
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) August 27, 2014 -- A recent news article in the Richmond, VA, Times-Dispatch (August 24, 2014) contained a list of “Five tips for relieving dry skin.” Sharon Kleyne, international water advocate and host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio show describes the article’s five tips as “indispensable” but suggests three additional tips that are seldom reported but which, Kleyne believes, are equally if not more important.

The Times-Dispatch tips are (1) Stop stripping your skin, (2) turn down the temperature, (3) be gentle, (4) travel smoothly (with no abrupt transitions), and (5) avoid itchy clothing. .
Kleyne’s three additional tips, all involving hydration and humidity, are: (1) be aware of places or activities that are high risk for dehydration, (2) be aware of the relative humidity, and (3) drink eight glasses of water a day.
Dry or dehydrated skin, Kleyne explains, is caused by a loss of water content in the skin, which should be about 70 percent water. Water enters the skin either internally via the blood or externally from the humidity in the air. When water is lost and the skin becomes dehydrated, the cause is usually some factor that increases the rate of water evaporation out of the skin and into the atmosphere. Certain internal factors such as illness, skin diseases, medications and body dehydration can also cause skin to become dry.
So called “moisturizer” lotions, Kleyne emphasizes, are actually moisture barriers that slow or prevent water evaporation into the air. These preparations can be beneficial for dry skin but only after water that has evaporated has been replaced. Moisturizer lotions do not add water to dry skin.
Be aware of places or activities that are high risk for dehydration. These include, according to Kleyne, summer sun, wind, indoor forced air heating and cooling, airline cabins, sports activities involving either sun exposure or perspiration, the desert, air pollution, hospital beds, the beach, long drives in a car or truck and much more. Sunburn, strong soap or chemicals, and irritants such as poison ivy can damage the protective oil layer and increase the rate of water evaporation.
Any activity that is dehydrating to the body, says Kleyne, or that results in perspiration can cause the skin to lose water. Body dehydration decreases the amount of water available to the skin internally via the blood.
Be aware of the relative humidity. The skin is best able to absorb moisture directly from the air, according to Kleyne, when the relative humidity, indoors or outdoors, is between 40 percent and 70 percent. Lower than that, the skin loses water to the air. Higher than that and the cooling effect of perspiration, which depends water evaporation from the skin surface, becomes impaired. The body then compensates by producing more perspiration and when the body perspires, it dehydrates internally. Room humidifiers, house plants, bowls of water or cracking a window will all increase indoor humidity.
Drink eight glasses of water a day. Eight glasses, Kleyne explains, assures that body, blood and skin will remain well hydrated. The eight glasses are in addition to other fluids such as coffee, tea, Juice or soft drinks. Alcohol is extremely dehydrating. Kleyne suggests two full glasses upon rising. Children under 12 should drink half their body weight in ounces per day.
