GoldSilver.org Applauds Florida City for Silver Coin Donation
Fort Worth (PRWEB) August 28, 2014 -- Texas-based precious metals dealer GoldSilver.org is giving some positive recognition to the city employees of St. Cloud, Florida who uncovered hundreds of silver coins weighing over 30 pounds, and then decided to donate the treasure trove to charity. Company spokesman Maria Martin says she hopes news of the kind gesture goes viral.
“These people were cleaning up someone else’s mess. Someone left the property with trash and overgrowth everywhere, and there were even abandoned vehicles in the yard,” Martin said. “Instead of keeping the coins for themselves they used them to help others, and that speaks volumes for these individuals as well as the city for whom they work.”
The bungalow in which the coins were found, according to an August 25 KGW Portland news report, had been abandoned and demolished months ago. "Not only was it unsafe, but it was also abandoned with numerous code violations, including vehicle abandonment, high grass, lack of property maintenance, unsafe trees, pests and loose metal that posed a danger, especially during stormy days," explained St. Cloud Police Chief Pete Gauntlett.
A total of 2,082 coins dating from 1917 to 1964 were recovered, and St. Cloud city employee Melissa Howes said it took hours to gather all of the coins. "It was like a treasure hunt... the more you dug, the more you found," Howes commented. City spokesperson Sandra Ramirez broke the news about the coins being earmarked for charity. By donating the coins to a charity it will "benefit the community as a whole," Ramirez said.
