NPSF President Among 100 Most Influential in Health Care
Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 27, 2014 -- Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president of the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) and the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute, is among the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare announced in the August 25 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. Also on the list are NPSF board members Jonathan Perlin, MD, PhD; and Andrew Sussman, MD, MBA; NPSF Lucian Leape Institute members Carolyn Clancy, MD; Bob Wachter, MD; and Gary Kaplan, MD, who is a member of both the Institute and the NPSF Board of Directors.
NPSF, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has served as a central voice for patient safety since 1997. The NPSF Lucian Leape Institute, founded in 2007 and composed of national thought leaders, is the Foundation’s think tank, providing strategic vision for the patient safety agenda.
Since 2003, Modern Healthcare has compiled an annual list to recognize “individuals in healthcare who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential individuals in the industry, in terms of leadership and impact.” A month-long nomination period earlier this year yielded 15,000 names. From that pool, 300 who had received the most nominations were chosen as finalists. The selection of the final 100 was based in part on public voting and in part on the magazine editors’ determination.
The patient safety and quality improvement areas of health care are well represented on this year’s list, which the magazine noted. “It is gratifying to see such broad recognition of the safety and quality advancements on which NPSF and many of our partners and collaborators have long focused,” said Dr. Gandhi.
Dr. Gandhi is one of only 21 women on this year’s list.
Dr. Clancy, assistant deputy under secretary for health, Veterans Affairs Department, marks her eleventh appearance on the Modern Healthcare list. Dr. Kaplan, CEO of Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, was named to the list five times previously. Dr. Wachter, chief, Division of Hospital Medicine, University of California San Francisco Medical Center, makes his second appearance on the list. Named for the first time this year are Dr. Gandhi; Dr. Perlin, president, Clinical Services, and chief medical officer, Hospital Corporation of America, and a member of the NPSF Board of Directors; and Dr. Sussman, president, Minute Clinic/CVS Caremark, and a member of the NPSF Board of Governors.
“It is wonderful to see so many of those who work with us on advancing the NPSF mission recognized in this way,” said Gregg S. Meyer, MD, MSc, chief clinical officer, Partners HealthCare, and current chair of the NPSF Board of Directors. “I know I speak for my fellow board members in saying how extremely proud we are to be associated with them.”
