Among the things the Labor Day weekend brings out, the one event that brings fans from around the northeast to Queens, N.Y. is the U.S. Open Tennis Championship. Held each year at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the U.S. Open is one of the most popular sporting events held across the country. The tournament brings some of the best male and female tennis players to the popular venue for a chance to win one of the top championships in the sport.
In 2013, Spaniard Rafael Nadal won the title for the second time of his career, but fans of the elite player won’t have the chance to see him do what he does best this year. Even without Nadal, the men’s draw features many of the top ranked players in the world including top-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic, ninth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, second-and-third-seeded Swiss players Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, and fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic. These players will all look to add another trophy to their collection at the conclusion of this event.
A year ago, it was a fifth title at the event for Serena Williams. One of the best female players in the history of the sport will look to get a sixth title this year and is the No. 1 seed in this tournament. She easily advanced past her first match of the event and despite the ease in which she advanced, will face some tough competition throughout the rest of the event. Among her biggest threats include eighth-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic, seventh-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, fourth-seeded Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska, fifth-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova, and second-seeded Romanian, Simona Halep.
The United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is home to the U.S. Open each year. The venue features 33 courts that are covered with DecoTurf. The venue is located down the street from Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets from Major League Baseball. The premiere court in the facility is the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which can seat more than 23,000 tennis fans.
