Drug Court Grad Brings More Life to Drug Court Program
USA (PRWEB) August 29, 2014 -- As reported by the Frederick News Post in the article Run For Recovery Started By Drug Court Grad (8/17), a graduate of the Frederick County Drug Treatment Court has found a new way to give back after his own experience with the program. The graduate, Korey Shorb, put together a race called Run For Recovery 5k, which also includes a 1 mile walk. He plans to donate the proceeds of the event to the program he graduated from as well as to those who helped him. Shorb, who graduated in 2008, admitted that he would probably be in jail if he wasn't first helped by the drug court. He ended up in that position due to an opiate addiction. The program itself is offered to offenders who have committed a nonviolent, addiction-related crime. Under the program, participants are regularly drug-tested and heavily monitored instead of being sent right to jail.
The state uses grant money and county funding to support the program. That is, until Shorb created his 5k run. Shorb was one of the 85% of participants who did not face any more drug-related charges after the first year. So far, the program has been able to save taxpayer money while also saving addicts from the negative effects of jail. Shorb was inspired to create a 5k run to support the program because he got back into running after getting clean. Shorb would like the proceeds of the run to purchase incentives for those who behave well in the program.
