Detroit International Powerboat Championships Brings Windsor and Detroit Together For Charities
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) September 04, 2014 -- On September 6-7th, over 40 offshore powerboats will race on the Detroit River in Downtown for the inaugural Detroit River International Powerboat Championships presented by 24 Grille.
This free community event is expected to draw over 150,000 attendees to Downtown Detroit and Windsor where prime viewing locations will bring attendees close to the racing action. Proceeds from the weekend will be donated back to local charities supporting Detroit youth, police, firefighters and veterans.
“Powerboat racing is a part of Detroit’s history. Garwood established powerboat manufacturing here in the 1930s and for years they held powerboat races on the Detroit River,” says Wes Wyatt Chairman of the races. “It’s time to bring back a great tradition, one that is fun for all ages.”
The race will begin up river from the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. The race course was designed to bring high-speed action directly in front of Hart Plaza holding true to the event’s motto “Detroit puts the race in your face.”
“Detroiters and attendees in Windsor will be able to watch an action packed race,” says President of the Detroit River International Championships, Tom McInnes. “We’ve planned a weekend of fun for families to see the boats, meet the racing teams, and enjoy the action.”
On Saturday there will be food and testing on the waters, along with meet and greets with the racing team. Sunday is the final championship race and the Mayor’s Cup will be presented by Mayor Mike Duggan. A more detailed schedule of events can be found at http://detroitoffshorerace.com/.
Proceeds from the weekend will be donated to Detroit PAL (Police Athletic League), the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, the Wayne County Youth and Senior Education Fund, and the Firemen’s Fund.
