ETI Offers One-Day Workshop on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing for Manufacturing

Effective Training, Inc., (ETI) an SAE International Company, announces “GD&T for Manufacturing,” a one-day workshop designed specifically for manufacturing personnel.

The workshop explains how to interpret common geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) specifications and other types of tolerancing indicated on two-dimensional engineering drawings.

The first workshop will be held Friday, Sept. 12, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in Livonia, Mich. A second workshop will be held on Monday, Oct. 13.

Alex Krulikowski, founder of ETI, has been teaching GD&T for more than 20 years, and has worked directly with the manufacturing sector at many companies. He developed the GD&T for Manufacturing course because there is no class out there tailored toward manufacturing personnel, where the need is often significant.

"A manufacturing worker with no GD&T knowledge is going to resist using a drawing with geometric tolerancing because the drawing looks intimidating,” Krulikowski said. "Putting a drawing with GD&T in front of someone who doesn't understand GD&T is like giving a book written in a foreign language to a person who doesn’t know the language. You wouldn’t expect that person to understand the book. Anyone working with a drawing that uses GD&T needs training that provides the ability to read it.”

The workshop includes an introduction to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and its impact on the manufacturing process. The course is based on the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard.

The course explains:

  •     Basic requirements of an engineering drawing
  •     Basic concepts and requirements of size dimensions
  •     Requirements of form tolerances
  •     The datum system, size datums, and datum targets
  •     Basic requirements of orientation, position, and runout tolerances
  •     The impact of tolerancing requirements on production
  •     In-process inspection
  •     GD&T impact on manufacturing
