Based on the 2014 Independent Grocers Financial Survey compiled by FMS Solutions (FMS) and the National Grocers Association, (NGA), FMS in collaboration with Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) developed the AWG Operator Financial Report. Results showed that Fiscal year 2013 was a strong year for AWG retailers, including higher-than-average net profits compared with independents overall.
While value remained front and center for many shoppers during the review period and the economy has far from returned to its pre-recession levels, AWG retailers managed to post a number of impressive results:
- Higher inflation-adjusted sales gains, at 0.94 percent compared with 0.51 percent in 2012.
- Steady margins, at 26.98 percent for the total store, and improvements in many key departments.
- Greater profits, at 1.83 percent in 2013 compared with 1.70 percent in fiscal year 2012. Independents as a whole saw a slight decrease in net profit performance, from 1.65 percent in 2012 to 1.51 percent in fiscal year 2013.
AWG independents did well in protecting margins — outperforming other independents in the total store margin and many key departments. Additionally, AWG operators showed better expense control, particularly in key areas of labor, benefits and rent. This led to a much higher-than-average profit of 1.83 percent, compared with 1.51 percent overall and 1.37 percent among non-AWG operators.
