Oklahoma City is America’s Most Surprising Cosmetic Surgery Capital
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) September 03, 2014 -- When it comes to cosmetic procedures in the United States, we tend to focus most of our attention on the cities known for having hoards of picture-perfect residents. From New York City’s Park Avenue to the sparkling sidewalks of Rodeo Drive, there’s certainly no shortage of plump pouts, big busts or wrinkle-free faces. New statistics on nationwide interest in cosmetic surgery contradict these generalizations, however, suggesting that the cities with the highest concentration of residents interested in cosmetic surgery are far from the Big Apple or The Golden Coast.
After analyzing tens of millions of consumer searches*, RealSelf — the leading online community helping people make confident choices in elective cosmetic procedures—has uncovered the most surprising cosmetic capitals in the US. Data collected by RealSelf shows that Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Austin, Denver and Omaha beat out their more urban counterparts for some of the top-searched invasive and non-invasive procedures, when interest was measured per capita.
Oklahoma City: Perhaps the most surprising of all, Oklahoma City is mommy makeover central, holding the number one spot for interest per capita in tummy tuck, breast augmentation AND breast lift—far exceeding sunny cities like Los Angeles and San Diego. Oklahoma City is also the US city most interested in labiaplasty (often referred in the media as ‘the designer vagina’)—with 40% more interest in the procedure than Los Angeles.
Dr. Anureet Bajaj, board certified Oklahoma City plastic surgeon, believes the trend could be driven by the economy. “Oklahoma City has been a little sheltered when it comes to the economic ups and downs,” she said, attributing the oil and natural gas industries to the city’s stability. Dr. Bajaj describes the women who visit her practice as “regular women and moms who just want to feel more confident.”
Salt Lake City: RealSelf previously found that Salt Lake City is home to the most board certified plastic surgeons per capita. Ultra-conservative Salt Lake also comes in second for interest per capita in breast augmentation and ranks in the top ten for Botox.
Austin: Sometimes thought of as immune to ‘everything is bigger in Texas’ syndrome, the city seems to be all about putting their best face forward—and fast. Austin comes in second for having the most interest in Botox per capita in the nation and takes the number one spot for searches around SmartLipo—a laser assisted liposuction procedure. The city ranks third for laser hair removal, fourth for CoolSculpting and fifth for interest in facial filler Juvederm. Austin is also home to those willing to go under the knife, coming in first nationwide for interest in facelift—with nearly double the number of facelift pageviews per capita than their fellow Texans in Dallas.
Denver: Sitting at 5,280 feet above sea level, Denver may be known as "The Mile-High City," but its residents are certainly not “above” getting a little work done. The city ranks second in the nation for their interest in Mommy Makeover, third for labiaplasty and sixth for rhinoplasty. Coming in fifth for interest in laser hair removal, ahead of New York City, the data suggests that maybe Denverites aren’t quite as au naturel as we’d think.
Omaha: Whether they’re lifting them up, adding a cup, or making them smaller, Omaha residents have among the highest collective interest in breast-centric procedures nationwide. The city steals the number one spot for their overall interest per capita in Mommy Makeover, and holds spots in the top 10 for breast lift, breast augmentation and breast reduction.
Omaha may seem like an unlikely candidate to be named a plastic surgery capital, but, like Oklahoma City, a strong economy and a high employment rate have helped make the city one of the most successful post-recession. In fact, all of the cities on our list were named on Forbes’ recent list of the “Best Places For Business And Careers,” suggesting that financial security is influential in residents’ decisions to undergo cosmetic procedures. Forbes ranked the cities as follows: Denver (#4), Oklahoma City (#7), Salt Lake City (#8), Austin (#19), and Omaha (#25).
