Monotype to Present Several Type Topics at ATypI Barcelona 2014
WOBURN, Mass. (PRWEB) September 08, 2014 -- Join Monotype’s John Giannopoulos, Toshi Omagari, Daniel Rhatigan, and Jim Wasco as they talk about the history, trends and mechanics of typography at ATypI Barcelona 2014. The annual conference presented by ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) will be held Sept. 17-21, 2014, at the BAU Design College and Museu del Disseny, Barcelona, Spain.
Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 11:55 a.m.
• Jim Wasco, senior type designer at Monotype, will present “OpenType features for Script Typefaces.” Wasco will show how script typefaces, such as his ITC Elegy™ and Mircosoft’s Segoe® Script typefaces use OpenType® features similar to Arabic scripts to ensure the typefaces function like real handwriting.
Friday, Sept. 19 at 12:05 p.m.
• Daniel Rhatigan, type director at Monotype, will present “The Infancy of the Monotype Library,“ an examination of British Monotype, formed in 1897, and an offshoot of its American counterpart. Rhatigan will discuss how type projects, especially those that predated digital drawing tools, required contributions from more people than just a named designer. He will show the evolution of some of the first typeface releases and explore how the collaborative evolution of their design relates to the library built in their wake.
Sunday, Sept. 21 at 10:00 a.m.
• John Giannopoulos, director of strategic alliances for Monotype, will present on Web font trends in ATypI’s panel, “The Adoption of Web Fonts Around the World & Opportunities Ahead.” As part of the presentation, Giannopoulos, along with partner experts from Google and Adobe, will discuss the global use of Web fonts and share his perspective on Web font trends and adoption drivers.
Sunday, Sept. 21 at 12:50 p.m.
• Toshi Omagari, typeface designer at Monotype, will present “TYPO TAPAS What's the point?” While type is traditionally measured using a point system, other elements, such as industrial paper, are often measured using the metric system. Omagari will discuss the history and benefits of using metric-based type sizes.
