La Jollans Take Power into Own Hands, Jumping on Solar Bandwagon
La Jolla, Calif. (PRWEB) September 04, 2014 -- Local residents have committed to install over 165,837-watts of solar power with the La Jolla Solar Program. The community program was created and administered by the locally owned and operated company Sullivan Solar Power, whose goal is to change the way the community generates electricity. Sullivan gave property owners an extra incentive to go solar – cash, regardless if the homeowner used a lease, loan or cash to pay for their solar power system.
"La Jolla property owners get it - they understand the benefits of clean energy, both economically and environmentally,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power. “We believe that La Jolla has the opportunity to transition itself to the strongest solar community in the nation."
Residential and commercial properties alike in La Jolla have jumped on the solar bandwagon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southwest Fisheries Science Center installed a scenic 117,680-watt solar photovoltaic system on the rooftop of their new facility, and UC San Diego is the largest solar producing institution in the region with more installed solar capacity than any other university.
“UC San Diego is a living laboratory for climate change research and solutions. Our clean energy initiatives are part of our comprehensive approach to creating a more sustainable future,” said Pradeep K. Kohsla, UC San Diego Chancellor.
Sullivan Solar Power recently completed seven on-campus solar power installations at UC San Diego, totaling 763,858-watts of renewable power. The newest UC San Diego solar installations will save the campus more than $2-million over the next 20 years.
“There is a reason San Diego is the solar capital of the nation; going solar is cheaper than SDG&E and San Diegans have the opportunity to see substantial savings by becoming their own energy producers,” said Sullivan.
San Diego was recently named the top solar city per capita by Environment America, and La Jolla played a role in that recognition. The 92037 zip code is second in the city of San Diego, only behind the industrial neighborhood just north of the border, 92154, according to California Solar Initiative data.
