Vallum Software extends the support of its GMI Agent to the Linux and UNIX platforms
Naples, FL (PRWEB) September 09, 2014
Vallum Software today announced it has reached an agreement with the GMI Foundation to develop a series of Linux and UNIX based agent programs to extend its existing Windows management platform support. This new change will expand the support of GMI and the Vallum Halo Manager to allow in-depth management of Linux and UNIX platforms using the well-tested General Management Interface specification, currently available for all types of Windows platforms.
The new Linux and UNIX based GMI agents will operate in a fashion identical to the Windows agents, incorporating the same management interface, extensible "App" architecture, and security model. This new software adaptation for the GMI agent to Linux and UNIX will allow end-users to manage Linux and UNIX servers in the exact same fashion as Windows servers, obtaining CPU, memory, and network statistics, and allowing additional GMI Apps to be uploaded to extend the range of agent functions.
Initially, Vallum will support all popular versions of Linux, expanding rapidly to permit Solaris platforms, and eventually other platforms (such as AIX and HPUX) to be managed using the GMI specification.
"At this time, with thousands of downloads and installations of the Vallum Halo Manager and GMI agent currently deployed, we have demonstrated beyond question that GMI and Halo are an effective tool for managing Windows platforms. We now plan to rapidly expand into end-point management of other platforms", said Lance Edelman, executive director of Vallum Software. "We see support of Linux and other UNIX platforms to be a logical next step for Vallum Software and for our user base."
The Vallum "Halo Manager", which is available for download and evaluation from the Vallum Website, provides availability monitoring, performance graphing, and e-mail notifications for subnets of up to 256 devices. Although Vallum Halo can manage non-Windows platforms, it currently requires the GMI agent to be installed on a Windows platform to permit assessment of CPU, processes, network traffic, and other detailed metrics.
The GMI foundation currently offers Software Development Kits (SDKs), agents, and GMI applications for general use, freely distributed to interested parties.
According to C.B. Bannet, a principal developer for the GMI foundation, "We have a unified picture of how to manage all types of devices. We fully support the porting of the GMI agent to as many platforms as possible, and appreciate Vallum Software's lead with this new project. We anticipate that this will be regarded as a historic step forward for the General Management Interface, and a new demonstration of GMI's unique power to simplify performance and end-point management of all types of devices."
