Local Hospital Takes on Employee Health Challenge with Mindfulness
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) September 10, 2014 -- In the midst of a stressful move approaching, and the day-to-day chaos their healthcare employees face, Boulder Community Health voluntarily takes on yet another obstacle. However, this obstacle is not the usual type. Instead the goal is to turn their chaos to calm, with the help of Diane Sieg, Mindfulness Speaker, Author, Coach, Yoga Teacher and Creator of the 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge and Your Mindful Year ( http://dianesieg.com ).
Sieg, a long-time ED nurse, will guide 577 registered hospital employees through mindfulness practices including deep breathing, meditation, movement, and body scan. They are challenged to practice these exercises a minimum of five minutes per day for 30 days. After seeing an average of 30% decrease in stress in two other organizations, chief nursing officer Jackie Attlesey-Pries, hired Sieg to “help people move through this big-time change at the hospital in a more positive way.”
Sieg explains the goals and inspiration behind the 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge and defines “mindfulness” for those who may not be familiar with the term. “Mindfulness is a simple concept – the practice of being aware of your experience in the present moment,” she states. While the concept is simple, she also notes it is difficult to remember to be mindful, especially in the busy and stressful days of a healthcare provider. The aim of the program is to give healthcare providers practical skills they can use to increase their engagement, decrease their stress, and focus on quality patient care.
Wanda Boyd is a perfect example of a hospital employee who faces a great amount of responsibility, deadlines, and stress in her career. At 62 years old, she is an administrative assistant to five various nursing directors, who explains, “I really appreciate the opportunity that the hospital gave us, bringing in this program, because it just reminds you every day to take five minutes and do some deep breaths or close your eyes and let go. It's helped me a lot.”
September 18th Sieg hosts a Launch Party for individuals and organizations interested in the “Your Mindful Year” program, a continuation of the 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge. Stay tuned for Boulder Community Health’s official challenge results as they complete the 30-Day mindfulness challenge September 11th.
