28 Countries Worldwide Sleep For Peace
Silver Spring, MD (PRWEB) September 09, 2014 -- On September 21, Hostelling International USA (HI USA) is hosting Sleep For Peace for the second consecutive year in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace. Due to its success in 2013, more than two dozen countries with a Hostelling International (HI) presence are joining in this year’s celebration.
Sleep for Peace recognizes HI USA’s enduring belief in the power of travel to foster a deeper understanding of people, places and the world around, which leads to a more tolerant world. Since HI is recognized by UNESCO as a peace-building NGO, it was a natural fit to rally participation across borders. Some participating countries include Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Spain.
HI hostels are hosting celebrations as unique as their destinations, inviting guests and/or the community to engage in dialogue and gain a new perspective on global issues and world cultures. Some activities being hosted by HI USA include:
HI Austin is hosting dinner and a documentary.
HI Baltimore is leading a Walk For Peace.
HI New York City is hosting a full week of activities, including a New York Peace Sights walking tour, live music, and a talent show.
HI Point Montara Lighthouse is hosting Gardening For Peace on the hostel grounds.
HI San Diego Downtown and HI Washington DC are each hosting Peace Conferences, allowing attendees to delve deeper into current topics surrounding tolerance.
HI San Francisco City Center is hosting a candlelight vigil, featuring live music and chants and mantras from various world religions.

“Sleep For Peace proves that it is possible for people from different backgrounds and beliefs to come together to discuss peace amicably and openly, and even leave as friends,” says HI USA CEO Russ Hedge. “This happens in our hostels every day, but Sleep For Peace as a worldwide celebration makes this message even more powerful.”
Guests staying at HI USA hostels on September 21, can engage in additional activities, including dinners, film viewings, city tours, and more.
